Lisbon In A Weekend

Lisbon is an ideal destination for a long weekend visit and this guide will detail what is feasibly and aim to demonstrate why Lisbon is one of the best capitals of Europe. The number of short stay tourists to visit Lisbon is rapidly increasing, greatly enhanced by the number of low cost airlines and availability of cheap tickets that fly directly into Lisbon airport.

As a destination Lisbon is blessed with an almost perfect climate, bright warm spring and autumn seasons and summers which are hot but made bearable by proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. Historically Lisbon is an ancient city that contains a rich and turbulent past and this is reflected in the varied architectural styles and the diverse tourist attractions. The present dire economic situation of Portugal means that Lisbon is surprisingly good value, especially for accommodation, mid-price food and transport.

Clubs in the Portuguese capital are bursting with African influences, attracting a diverse crowd to unusual, mainly outdoor venues. Local DJs and musicians

In the maze of bars that make up the Bairro Alto neighbourhood, this quirky place serves plastic cups of ice-cold beer to an eclectic crowd who spill out on to the surrounding cobbled streets until the early hours.

Lounging on the all-white cushions of this sun-kissed riverfront terrace is the best way to idle away a summer’s afternoon in a haze of minty mojitos, flirtatious chatter and sunbathing.

Music Box

This is Lisbon’s cavernous den of debauchery and wild live music. Nightly, sweat drips from the open-brick ceiling of this hip under-archway club as trendy twentysomethings writhe to live DJs, MCs and bands.

One of Lisbon’s largest “superclubs” is part-owned by John Malkovich. Set in a monstrous dockland warehouse, it boasts an enormous dance floor and is filled with oversized armchairs, sofas and white pillars, with giant glitterballs (of Studio 54 ilk) looming overhead. The river-facing rooftop balcony is the spot for cocktails at dawn.

Witnessing the capital’s wildest nights for the past 20 years, Kremlin is a long-standing HQ of hedonism and depravity. Expect to see all sorts from dolled-up drag queens to dapper dandies in this one-size-fits-all late-night/early-morning venue.

Lisbon gay

Lisbon has a sparkling night life for gay and lesbians. Great bars, clubs and typical fado-cafes are to find in the oldest part of Lisbon: Bairro Alto. But don’t forget the beautiful  gay beaches and the cultural richness of Portugal’s capitol.

Mariza, The most famous Portuguese Fado singer nowadays

Mariza was the only Portuguese Fado singer to join the Live 8 concerts and the first national artist to perform on “Late Show with David Letterman” in the United States and on “Later withConcerts-mariza Jools Holland” of the English BBC.

Fado is a Portuguese style of music that was elevated to the rank of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

The word fado comes from fatum Latin, and this is one of the most popular explanations which refers the origin of the Lisbon fado to the song of the Moors, who in turn remained in the neighborhood of Mouraria.

However, the fate just happened to be really known in 1840 in the streets of Lisbon, and to date only the sailor fate was known.

Many people still feel a bit curious to know what it really means the fado.

The truth is that this type of fado comes from our ancestors, where the taverns were places of encounter between nobles, artists, workers of the gardens, popular and foreigners gathered to sing and enjoy the retail fado.

The topics most sung in fado focus mainly on longing, nostalgia, jealousy, little stories of everyday life of neighborhoods and labors Bulls.

These were the topics allowed by the Salazar dictatorship, which in turn also allowed the tragic fate that falassse of jealousy and passion, but blamed all fado lyrics that speak of social and political problems.

This classic fado singers stand out as
– Carlos Ramos,
– Alfredo Joiner,
– Maria Amelia Proenca,
– Berta Cardoso,
– Maria Teresa de Noronha,
– Herminia Silva,
– Fernando Farinha,
– Fernando Mauricio,
– Lucilia do Carmo
– Manuel de Almeida.

In turn, the modern fado Began up and had much success with the singer known as Amália Rodrigues, who popularized the fado with lyrics of great poets such as Luís de Camões, Jose Regio, Alexandre O’Neill, Pedro Homem de Mello and among many others.

Born in Lisbon fado quickly became a kind of national music and today is known worldwide.

May be accompanied by violins, orchestra, cello but there are an instrument that is fundamental to fado, this instrument is the Portuguese guitar.

The southern Portuguese region of the Algarve is a huge summer destination for many Portuguese residents, as well Europeans, as the vast coastline of warmer water currents and consistent sunny weather are ideal for the perfect beach vacation. That said, the Algarve  also tends to have a reputation for being crowded and touristy, especially in the major coastal cities of Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos. But there is one beach-front area that has managed to not only avoid heavy exploitation, but has also remained unspoiled and pure, and that is the lovely area of Sagres.sagres
